I'M A NATURALIST KING
Can you imagine how a naturalist feels when they
see a completely unknown animal for the first time? Have you ever thought that
naturalists had to draw because there were no cameras? And they took note of
every detail, because they didn't know when they would see the same animal again?
Let's travel back in time, meet a king who liked drawing more than maths, and
become A naturalist for a few hours.
MY HOME IS THE ENTIRE WORLD
It is one of the world's oldest mysteries.
Thousands of seabirds and sea turtles travel unimaginable distances, repeating
the same feat every year. They do so with the precision of an experienced
navigator. And, oddly enough, ocean storms or large predators are not their
biggest enemies. Their biggest enemy is the urban waste that reaches the sea
every day, produced by all of us. Let's travel around the world and learn about
the little big dangers that wait for our brave migrants.
WORDS ON THE LOOSE AT THE MUSEUM
Listening to the lively reading of popular
stories, tales or legends, and with the help of some of the museum's
naturalised specimens, we will all delve into our imagination to meet
characters that have lived underwater all their lives.
EACH ANIMAL ON ITS OWN SHELF
Grades 5 and 6 / grades 7 to 9
A workshop designed to increase the students' knowledge of different groups in the animal world and improve their language skills. Using cards with short descriptions and pictures of animals, pupils discuss among themselves and try to find out which group each presented animal belongs to.
COME AND MEET THE SHARKS!
Pre-School / grades 1 to 4 / grades 5 and 6 / grades 7 to 9
Sharks were one of the animal groups preferred by Dom Carlos. They are the most feared inhabitants of the aquatic world, but also those that awake the greatest fascination and charm in Man. They are fish characterised by a sophisticated biology and a wide variety of species, resulting from millions of years of evolution. In this workshop, students will be guided as they develop a number of activities that will lead them to learn more about the life of these animals, being challenged to think, feel and act on the proposed theme.
A SEA OF DISCOVERIES
Pre-School
Did you know that the Vasco da Gama Aquarium is so old that it already existed when your grandparents were little? And that the first marine animals that our scientist monarch, Dom Carlos, studied on our coast are kept here? In this activity, children will be invited to meet the animals in the collection of the prince who dreamed of the bottom of the sea; they will be able to come into contact with the inhabitants of our beaches, look for characters from cartoons, and even discover who lives in the Portuguese sea. By carrying out small tasks, the group will be taken on a tour in the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, bringing together different types of knowledge about the sea.
THE RIVER GUARDIANS
Grades 1 to 4 / grades 5 and 6
'Near the riverbanks live small tribes of creatures who wear tattoos of plants and animals on their bodies. Scientists have not yet been able to study them very well, as they hide easily...'
'The River Guardians is a story inspired by the children who join us every year to look after local freshwater fish populations. Is there anything more important for a child than to feel that they can grow up with their local river?
In this activity we will discover the plants and animals that live on the banks of rivers and streams in Portugal. Plus, this educational workshop include a surprise gift to allow children to continue playing by the river in the classroom.
