Frigate Captain Maestro Carlos da Silva Ribeiro was born in Santa Maria de Bouro, Amares, and spent his childhood in Vidago, where he began and pursued his musical studies under the guidance of his father, then conductor of the local Philharmonic Band.
In 1971, after a national competition, he joined the Navy Band where he pursued his career as an Alto Saxophone soloist, performing several times as a concert musician until he became Naval Maestro Musician Officer.
At the same time, he continued and completed his military/academic/artistic training, completing the following courses at the National Conservatory: Complementary Course in Saxophone, Acoustics, History of Music, and Higher Course in Composition, as well as the Technical-Naval Internships inherent to the pursuit of a career in the Navy.
In 1983, he attended the 1st Orchestra Conducting Course promoted by the Portuguese Musical Education Association and sponsored by the German Music Council, which was taught by Maestro Hans Herbert Joris.
As a performer, he played in several symphony orchestras based in Lisbon (Gulbenkian, Emissora Nacional (Sinfónica e Ligeira), and S. Carlos), in various Chamber Music groups within the National Conservatory and in other Light Music groups; in this context, we highlight the 1974 tour across Canada and the United States where, in addition to performing in various cities, he participated in television shows broadcast from Toronto and New York.
His civil activity is divided between Band and Choir Conducting and Music Teaching in several Academies, and he has been repeatedly invited to chair the juries of the Master's in Band Conducting at the PIAGET Institute of Almada.
He is the author of several light compositions that have been recorded and released, and several arrangements for the Navy Band and small groups.
He is a member of the International Military Music Society.
