The Navy Band plays an important role in the cultural and civic education of individuals in the social context to which it belongs, integrating various specific activities into its wider mission. One of these activities consists of holding what we internally call Pedagogical Concerts. Aimed at a young audience, from babies to teenagers, our Pedagogical Concerts are the reflection of an attitude of educational proactivity that the Band regards as being intrinsic to its existence, both as a whole and as a sum of the individual experiences of its members. In fact, the majority of the members of the Navy Band obtained their basic musical education as children, and many of them had the privileged stimulus of coming into contact with the world of Philharmonic Bands, often boosted by the ambition of joining professional ensembles such as the Navy Band and similar groups. Aware of the relevance of coming into contact with these musical realities in stimulating and developing creative skills and sensibilities, in general, and artistic sensibilities, in particular, the Navy Band regularly includes in its calendar a number of Pedagogical Concerts that, over the years, accompanies the sound and cultural imagination of hundreds of children and teenagers.
Each Concert is an audible and playful illustration of each instrument from the various organological families that make up the Navy Band. The chosen repertoire, which includes themes aimed at the young audience to which it is destined, provides knowledge of the use of the instruments presented above, helping to consolidate a culture based on curiosity and motivation for learning, the pillar of a solid and dynamic knowledge. More than training those who attend these Concerts from the musical point of view, our intention is to promote an interesting and careful approach to music listening, a vehicle for social and human values such as respect for difference, an understanding of the value of each part in the construction of a uniform and harmonious whole, the integration of freedom in responsible action, in short, the foundations of a richer human education geared towards a social sensitivity that is extremely important in a society eager for more structuring and balanced human values.
The sound, the harmony, the rhythm, the timbres, the intensity, the textures, the gestures, the Maestro/Performers relationship, the Performers/Audience relationship, are educational values specific to the musical culture that the Navy Nand advocates and disseminates, and which we hope can guide the healthy artistic experiences of our young listeners. So many of them will keep a subtle memory of a happy and different day, and so many of them will one day recognise that instant as the foundation of a dream or an ambition of professional achievement in the world of arts in general, and music in particular. But in either case, our mission will have been completely accomplished.
