Atrim

The Atrim has been welcoming our visitors for over 100 years and is part of the memories of many of us. Preserving much of the original design of the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, the architecture naturally evokes the time of its inauguration - the late 19th century.

The exhibition explores themes that marked that period in the history of aquatic sciences in Portugal, such as the beginning of national oceanographic studies, with the first campaign carried out by Dom Carlos I, in 1896, and the inauguration of the Aquarium itself, as part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama, in 1898.

Following the first steps of the young prince who dreamed of discovering the secrets of the deep sea, the exhibition explores marine organisms, historical objects and lesser-known scientific documents by Carlos de Bragança.
