Vessels were widely used as means of transport between the 19th and mid-20th century to transport passengers and goods along the coast, rivers and streams, as well as between river banks. In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, the “Cacilheiro” boat, a round-bottomed vessel with a large triangular lateen sail, was used to transport passengers and goods.
It is at the origin of the name given to the ferryboat that connects the banks of the River Tagus, currently used by thousands of people every day.
