Gago Coutinho designed this device in order to calculate a seaplane’s drift, depending on the direction and intensity of the wind. The course correction device was first used in the journey between Lisbon and Funchal in 1921, which served to test the techniques and calculation procedures that would later be used in the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic.​
