The climate and geography of the Portuguese coast favoured the development of an intense fishing activity which, since the Roman era, gave rise to numerous settlements. This 'lancha' or 'galeão' represents the town of Nazaré and its customs, which have managed to remain virtually unchanged to this day. This vessel has an elongated hull and a rounded bow with an ogival shape.
It was one of the traditional vessels most commonly used for American purse seining, a fishing technique in which vessels are strategically used to deploy a net in a circle to prevent the shoals of fish that enter it from escaping.
