Long-distance fishing is usually carried out in international waters or in waters subject to another jurisdiction. This activity is deeply rooted in several Portuguese coastal towns, with a strong centuries-old tradition, and the most famous of all is cod fishing. Codfish luggers like the 'Argus' travelled to the fishing spots where they dropped their dories - small individual boats from where fishermen caught cod using the line fishing technique.

The lugger 'Argus' was used for cod fishing between 1939 and 1970.

In 1975, it was sold to a Canadian company to be used on tourist cruises in the Caribbean, and returned to Portugal in 2009.
