Grupo de Amigos do Museu de Marinha (The Maritime Museum's Friends Group)
What is it?
The Grupo de Amigos do Museu de Marinha (GAMMA) is a non-profit educational and cultural Association, made up of single and collective entities for an undetermined duration. It has its headquarters in Lisbon, but it may establish delegations anywhere in Portugal and abroad.
What is its goal?
To promote the Maritime Museum and contribute to its enrichment and renovation.

How did it begin?
The Grupo de Amigos do Museu de Marinha (Maritime Museum's Group of Friends) Organizing Commission was born in the end of 1954. It would be officially implemented, by order of the then Minister of the Navy, on January 14th, 1955. Ever since then, the GAMMA has been devoted to safeguarding Portugal's naval heritage and culture. Many renowned individuals have been a part of GAMMA: Admiral Gago Coutinho Rear-admiral Alfredo Motta, Admiral Afonso Cerqueira, Commanders António Esparteiro, Jaime Corrêa do Inso and Álvaro Gil Fortée; as well as Merchant Marine Commander Luís Armando de Loura and the Count of Arcos, D. José de Alarcão, the Marquis of Rio Maior, D. João de Oliveira e Sousa, José Manuel de Mello, Ambassador Pedro Theotónio Pereira and the journalist Maurício de Oliveira, among others.
