Research Service

Museums provide opportunities for the appreciation, understanding and management of the natural and cultural heritage.

UNESCO/ICOM - Code of Ethics for Museums

The role of the Maritime Museum is not limited to the conservation and public display of its collection, either in storage or in the permanent exhibition. It is also responsible for conducting and promoting documental research, enabling the contextualization and understanding of the historical value and significance of its collection, both as individual objects or as a whole, in its most varied expressions and features.

The study and promotion of the various aspects of the Portuguese Maritime History are part of the mission and responsibilities of the Maritime Museum. This research results in the update of the permanent exhibition and in the scientific basis for the objects and storyline used in temporary and itinerant exhibitions, as well as on the conceptual and thematic organization of several museum nuclei within the Portuguese Navy.

On top of that, the study and research of the Museum's collections and its related themes also enable the definition of an acquisition policy, contributing to the proper planning and management of the Museum's cultural programming.

However, research work far extends the scope of internal demands. The volume of information and research cooperation requests, both domestic and foreign, personal and institutional, shows the growing interest in Portugal's maritime past. By supporting dialogue and cooperation with various counterparts, such as museums and other cultural and educational organizations, research activities have contributed to the promotion of the Portuguese Maritime Museum and hence Portugal's maritime heritage and traditions.

Heritage Service

The ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums states that Museums should safeguard their collections, preserving, studying and promoting them for the benefit of society, in accordance with other applicable codes and laws, both national and international.

The Heritage Service is responsible for the management of the Maritime Museum's collections: controlling accessioning, maintaining documentation and properly updated catalogue records, handling temporary and long-term loans, managing the storage areas, monitoring and controlling environmental conditions, guaranteeing preventive conservation, supervising remedial conservation, and providing access to the collections.

In addition, the Heritage Service is also responsible for the elaboration of technical studies and procedures regarding collections management, applicable to the Maritime Museum's collections, and to the rest of the Portuguese Navy's collections.

One of the Heritage Service's other missions is the organization, preservation and promotion of the Maritime Museum's collections of photos, audiovisual material and technical plans, which are made available to the public.

Furthermore, it is responsible for the manufacture and maintenance of the Museum's collection of models, both on display and in storage, as well as the production of display material for the temporary exhibitions the Museum organizes.

Some of the Heritage Service's most important projects include the conservation and restoration of objects on display, the assessment of the collection from a conservation standpoint, the reorganization of the Museum's storage areas, the implementation of an adequate database, the installation of environmental monitoring systems and the development of a preventive conservation plan.
