The large planisphere that covers the back wall of the Maritime Museum's main entrance hall shows the boundaries established in the Treaty of Tordesillas and the main maritime routes used by the Portuguese navigators. The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the world into two areas of interest; the meridian was located 370 leagues west of the Island of Santo Antão, in Cape Verde and the Western hemisphere would belong to Castile while the Eastern hemisphere would belong to Portugal.
This planisphere, made by Museum employees in the 1960s, describes - in extraordinary detail - the main routes of the sea voyages made by Portuguese navigators, details of the fauna, flora, people and places reached by the Portuguese.
