The Portuguese Navy is the branch of the Portuguese Armed Forces and has as its core mission the cooperation with other branches of the Armed Forces towards the military defence of the Portuguese Republic through naval operations.
Without putting at stake its mission, as well as any operations carried out according to international commitments, the Portuguese Navy is also responsible for the execution of a large number of activities generically categorized as public service missions.
Thus, it is the Navy’s responsibility to ensure search and rescue missions at sea, as well as maintaining the security of navigation in Portuguese waters through maritime signalling; patrolling of fishing activities and of illegal sea-borne activities; preservation of maritime resources and combat against pollution; scientific research and promotion of cultural activities and of the Portuguese maritime cultural heritage.
