Spanning two distinct centuries, the Portuguese Navy is the main focus of this room. Here, one can find over 60 objects, ranging from paintings to military distinctions, from weapons to ship models, from uniforms to nautical instruments, and a series of other exhibits that stand as a testament to the Navy’s activity throughout 200 years.
From this vast collection, some objects stand out, mainly due to their relation with important historical moments. Such is the case with the corvettes Mindelo and Afonso de Albuquerque, the cruiser Adamastor, the gunboats Pátria and Bengo, the minesweeper Augusto Castilho, the dispatch vessel Afonso de Albuquerque, and the small patrol launch Vega.
Also present is the school ship Sagres, a vessel that has served as an itinerant embassy of the Portuguese Navy throughout the world.
Beyond a military and strategic aspect, the Portuguese Navy was also present in important chapters of Portuguese scientific and diplomatic history. The prime examples of the important research contributions of the Navy are the expeditions into Africa by Navy officers Roberto Ivens and Hermenegildo Capelo, crossing the continent and uniting Angola and Mozambique by land, and the research carried out by the Hydrographical Institute.
