Recreational and Competition Navy

In Portugal, recreational and competition navigation, essentially sailing, is an activity that has existed for centuries, although until the mid-19th century it was almost exclusive to the royal family. Royalty and high aristocracy have always maintained a close relationship with nautical activities. King Luís started out as a naval officer. He was only crowned due to the premature death of his brother, Prince Pedro V. His son, King Carlos, was also an exceptional sailor and is considered the founder of Portuguese oceanography.

In terms of Competition Navy, the first nautical sports organisation in our country was the Royal Naval Association, created in 1856, which, after the establishment of the Republic, would become known as the Lisbon Naval Association.

In the last few decades, the increase in the number of Nautical Clubs and Associations, the subsequent increase in the number of practitioners, and several outstanding results achieved both in Portugal and abroad reflect the growing success of this activity.
